The Corolla surf is firing on multiple species right now, and the offshore bite is picking up just in time for the season.
Bluefish
Bluefish are pushing through the Corolla beaches in solid numbers this month. Fish up to 35 inches are showing in the surf — this is the prime window for blues along the mid-Atlantic coast as they make their spring migration north. Cut bait is producing well, with some fish also coming on artificials.
Puppy Drum
Slot-sized puppy drum are working the surf troughs alongside the blues. This is typical for May on the northern Outer Banks — juvenile red drum feed actively in the wash as water temps climb. Worth targeting if you're set up in the surf.

Black Drum
Black drum in the 5 to 25-pound class are also showing. Bottom feeders that work the sloughs and cuts — cut bait is the play here.
Sea Mullet
Sea mullet (also called kingfish or whiting) are in the mix and providing consistent action. Good table fare and reliable in the surf this time of year.

Sharks
Large sharks are moving through after dark. May through September is peak season for blacktip, spinner, and sandbar sharks following the bait up the beach.
Inshore & Nearshore Charters
The inshore bite is solid right now. Charters are finding medium to large bluefish, nice-sized red drum, and sea bass on the nearshore wrecks. Good variety for mixed groups and anyone who wants to stay closer to home.

Offshore
Yellowfin and blackfin tuna are putting in a good showing at the Gulf Stream edge. A few scattered mahi are in the mix as well — the mahi action should build over the next week or so as conditions continue to improve. If you've been thinking about an offshore trip, the timing is right.
