May is one of the better times to be running offshore out of the Outer Banks.

Water temps are climbing, bait is stacking up, and the Gulf Stream action is building across multiple species right now.

Mahi-Mahi (Dolphinfish, Dorado)

Mahi are showing offshore, and this is right in line with what you’d expect for this time of year along the NC coast. Water temps rising through May and into early summer push weed lines and baitfish out to the break — and mahi follow.

The C-Therapy crew is putting clients on fish. If mahi is on your list, now is a solid window to get out there.

Black Sea Bass

Sea bass are producing well on the nearshore and offshore structure out of Corolla. The Graveyard of the Atlantic gives the OBX some of the most productive bottom structure on the East Coast, and sea bass hold tight to that structure year-round.

Great table fare. Good fights on lighter gear. A solid species for any level of angler.

Tilefish

Tilefish are deep-water fish — they live along the continental shelf edge in several hundred feet of water — and the offshore runs out of the OBX put anglers right in range. Blueline tilefish and golden tilefish are both present in these waters. Golden tilefish in particular are excellent eating — one of the most underrated table species in the Atlantic. This is a trip for anglers who want to go deep and come home with a serious cooler.
