May is one of the better times to be fishing the Corolla beach. The water's warming, the bait is moving, and the surf is producing across multiple species right now. Here's what's happening.

Bluefish — Strong Numbers in the Surf

Bluefish up to 35 inches are showing well along the Corolla beaches right now. This is typical for May — blues are mid-migration, pushing north along the mid-Atlantic coast as water temps climb, and the Corolla surf is a prime intercept point. Cut bait is the primary producer, with some fish also coming on artificials.

When they're stacked and feeding, the action can be fast.

If you're rigged up and in the right spot, this is some of the best surf fishing the OBX offers all year.

Puppy Drum & Black Drum

Puppy drum and black drum are both in the mix along the beach. The drum showing right now are predominantly slot-sized puppy drum — hard-fighting fish working the sloughs and troughs along the surf line. Cut bait is producing on both species. Worth knowing: the big bull drum push that draws anglers from across the country doesn't arrive until September and October.

What's in the surf right now is a warm-up act — and it's worth fishing.

Sea Mullet (Kingfish / Whiting)

Sea mullet are showing consistently in the Corolla surf. Reliable, bottom-feeding fish that bite well in the trough on fresh shrimp and cut bait — good action for families and anyone who wants to keep a line tight while waiting on the bigger stuff. If you're not from the OBX, you may know these as kingfish or whiting.

Same fish. Good table fare.

Inshore Charters — C-Therapy

The inshore and nearshore bite is running solid right now. C-Therapy is putting clients on medium to large bluefish, good-sized red drum, and sea bass on the nearshore wrecks. The nearshore structure off the OBX holds fish year-round, but spring is a particularly good window — water clarity tends to be better before the summer runoff sets in. Good variety without a long run.

After Dark — Sharks

Large sharks are moving through the Corolla surf after dark. The bait concentration that's driving the bluefish bite is pulling them in. If you're targeting sharks, come with the right gear — heavy conventional, wire leaders, large chunk baits. The 4WD beach north of the light village has good access for serious surf anglers running after dark.
